Like its similarly named Scotch counterpart, Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a malt whiskey - that is too say a whiskey distilled from the fermented alcoholic liquid produced from malted-barley grains, milled and mixed with water and yeast.
The whiskey must be the product of a single distillery - hence the “Single” part of the name - and have been distilled and matured in Ireland. Thus it is “Single” - or from one distillery - “Malt” - or whiskey made from malted barley - “Irish Whiskey” - produced in Ireland.
