Blended Scotch is a mix of malt and grain whisky that is carefully married together to produce a cohesive and distinct whole. The component whiskies involved are, of course, subject to the regulations pertaining to whisky production within Scotland and as such have been matured for at least three years in oak casks. Many blends involve a considerable number of individual malts and several grains and it is not uncommon to find forty or more whiskies employed in maintaining a consistent profile.
There is much snobbery and prejudice levelled at Blended whisky but some time spent exploring the range of blends available will reward any whisky lover with a greater understanding and appreciation of the skill involved in their production. The work of a master blender in both creating a well-balanced and engaging blend, while also maintaining its character regardless of differing component whiskies and their availability can only be revered.
