The history of the J G Monnet company dates back to 1838 when a group of vineyard owners formed an association - Societe des Proprietaires Vinicoles de Cognac. The company wasn’t named J G Monnet until 1897 when Jean-Gabriel Monnet lent his name to this cognac house as well as bestowing it its salamander emblem. Salamanders were popular on the coats of arms of the kings of France. Mythically reputed to be able to survive fire, Monnet adopted the creature both as a nod to the royal heritage and also to represent cognac’s survival of the flames during distillation process.
