Crown Royal is brand of Canadian Blended Whisky which was originally created by Samuel Bronfman, head of Seagram in 1939, to celebrate the royal visit of reigning monarch King George VI, along with his wife, Queen Elizabeth. The whisky is produced at Crown Royal distillery in Gimli near Lake Winnipeg and is now owned by drinks group Diageo.
Crown Royal uses a blend of grain spirits to achieve it's distinctive smooth character and depth of flavour, this includes malted barley, corn, rye and wheat and the spirit is matured in a range of different cask types. Ex-Bourbon barrels, ex-sherry and wine casks and new oak barrels are used and the matured spirit is then combined by the master blender to find the perfect balance for Crown Royal Canadian Whisky.
You will notice that Crown Royal spell 'whisky' without and 'e' which is true for most Canadian brands. If they were based in America it would most likely be known as Crown Royal Whiskey.
