One of the “big four” cognac brands - the other three being Hennessy, Martell & Remy Martin - Courvoisier produced what were considered to be very popular but rather uninspiring brandies. That all changed when during the late 1990s and early 2000s the company started to release far more interesting and rewarding cognacs. A good example of these includes, the premium release, Courvoisier Initiale Extra.
The company traded for many years on the notion that it was Napoleon’s favourite brandy however it is worth noting that Courvoisier was established in 1835 - fourteen years after Napoleon Bonaparte died. Perhaps, with a renewed focus on quality production, Courvoisier will no longer feel the need to fret over whether or not a long dead French leader did or didn’t like a brandy which almost certainly bears very little resemblance to the spirit they bottle today.
